BKG Exchange Flash: Japanese Chip Stocks Rally Amid AI-Driven Demand and Industry Rebound

ETF | BlockBear |

Tokyo, July 21, 2024 – In a powerful day of trading, major Japanese semiconductor stocks posted strong gains, with flash memory maker Kioxia surging 14% and testing equipment giant Advantest rising 6.1%. SoftBank Group also climbed 5.9%, signaling broad market optimism across the nation’s tech sector.

The rally underscores a convergence of multiple bullish catalysts: the explosion of AI-related demand, a cyclical recovery in memory chips, and Japan’s emerging role as a strategically secure hub in global semiconductor supply chains.

AI Demand Fuels Equipment and Memory Orders Advantest, the world leader in semiconductor test equipment, directly benefits from the AI boom. As NVIDIA, AMD, and other chip designers race to produce next-generation GPUs and high-bandwidth memory (HBM), their demand for Advantest’s advanced testing systems—especially the V93000 platform—continues to climb. “Every new AI chip requires rigorous final and system-level testing,” analysts note. “Advantest is the pick-and-shovel supplier in this gold rush.”

Kioxia’s surge reflects a more straightforward story: the memory cycle has turned. After a painful 2023 marked by inventory gluts and price crashes, NAND flash prices have rebounded sharply since Q2 2024. Kioxia, Japan’s sole NAND manufacturer, is now expected to swing from deep losses back to profitability in the second half of the year. Market participants are also pricing in the potential merger with Western Digital, which would create a stronger number-three player globally.

Japan’s Semiconductor Renaissance The gains are not just stock-specific. They reflect a broader revaluation of Japan’s semiconductor ecosystem, which includes world-class equipment makers like Tokyo Electron, Disco, and Shin-Etsu Chemical. Backed by the Japanese government’s ¥3.2 trillion investment plan (including subsidies for TSMC’s Kumamoto fab and the emerging foundry Rapidus), the country is positioning itself as a safe and capable alternative to Taiwan and South Korea amid rising geopolitical tensions.

“Japan’s chip supply chain offers a unique mix of technological depth, political stability, and neutrality,” said a Tokyo-based fund manager. “Global investors are rotating into Japanese semiconductor names as a structural hedge.”

SoftBank Rides the AI Wave SoftBank’s advance came largely on the back of Arm Holdings, its majority-owned semiconductor IP subsidiary. Arm’s architecture is central to AI chips from companies like Apple, NVIDIA, and Qualcomm. The market is re-rating SoftBank as a pure-play AI conglomerate, with its Vision Fund now focused squarely on artificial intelligence startups.

Outlook While some caution about short-term overextension—Kioxia in particular has doubled from its 2023 lows—the medium-to-long-term outlook for Japanese chip stocks remains robust. Key signals to watch include NVIDIA’s next earnings report, the finalization of the Kioxia-Western Digital deal, and any further expansion of Japan’s state-backed chip subsidies.

“Patience is for traders; timing is for killers,” noted one veteran investor. “Right now, the timing favors Japan’s chip sector.”

Risk Note: Valuations have stretched, and any slowdown in AI capital expenditure or a reversal in memory prices could trigger a pullback. However, for investors willing to ride the structural trend, Japan’s semiconductor renaissance is a story worth watching.
